Mentor Blog Post #2

The blog I looked at this week was ran by a college called Make School. The Make School Blog had it’s posts separated into four main categories. These categories were listed as news, podcasts, student spotlight, and admissions. On the homepage, I had the option of filtering the posts so that I only looked at posts from one of the categories. When looking back through all the posts they had posted, I was surprised at how little time it took to reach the first post. I was even more surprised when I looked at the date and realized that their first post was posted August 18, 2014. This meant that the Make School Blog had been active for over five years. It was clear that they don’t post on their blog very often because the last two posts are a month apart as of November 20, 2019. The main purpose of the blog appeared to be to encourage others to come to their college or to encourage people to go into STEM careers, especially computer science. I noticed that some of their posts were written specifically for women who were either in STEM fields or considering going into these fields. For example, 10 Women Who Contributed to the History of Computer Science and 6 Resources for Women in Tech. If would guess that this was done to encourage more women to go into STEM fields as those fields are traditionally dominated by men. However, as the years have been progressing this even distribution has been decreasing. They also posted many posts that were directed at any person who was a young adult or older, who visited their page.

One of the most interesting things about this blog was that it had a podcast. However, unlike most podcasts there were not weekly posts. similarly to the rest of the blog these podcasts appeared to lack a consistent uploading scheduled. I also found it very cool that they would share student’s stories. It was fun to read about the amazing things that people close to my age were doing. Similarly to the other blog I looked at, I enjoyed how this blog was well organized. I found this blog to have an even better organization because all of their articles were listed chronologically. This made it easier to find the most up to date information. In general, I found the Make School Blog to be very interesting as a whole. This is probably due to the fact that I really enjoy many of the aspects of STEM. Finally, I thought that the blog did a great job of linking in other possible websites that a reader may want to look at after reading their posts. For example, when they wrote an article about one of their students, they linked her personal blog at the bottom of their article.

One of the things I thought they could have done better was that they could have posted more frequently with a regular upload schedule. From what I could tell, they posted at very random times and sometimes waited a month or more in between posts. However, I understand that sometimes it is hard to find interesting things to post about on a regular basis. Overall, I wouldn’t recommend this blog to help you in deciding where you wanted to go to college because their major goal is to get you to come to their college or t least convince you to major in computer science. This means all their information is biased. They also generally don’t write about choosing where you want to go to college. However, I think that this blog could be very helpful if you knew that you wanted to pursue computer science as a degree.
