Mentor Post #4

For my fourth mentor blog post, I looked at College Raptor. I discovered that this was another blog that was focused primarily on college. However, they did have a page on their website that was focused on exploring careers. This blog had four main tabs with different topics surrounding colleges but I focused primarily on the tab about finding colleges. Again this blog appears to be very popular and run almost like a business. When you first pull up this website, the blog reminds you to apply to their “College Raptor Scholarship” for about 2,500 dollars. After looking at the page awhile the site sometimes prompts you to give the, your email in order to receive expert college advice. You also have an ability to make an account so they can help you sort through the colleges and recommend ones for you specifically to look at. I noticed that most of the articles on their page do not have specific authors and instead say that they were just published or updated by college raptor staff.

One of my favorite things about this blog was the way it was formatted. Each post very clearly showed the title, who wrote it, and the subcategory the post fit into. I also appreciated how each post was divided into different sections. This made all of the posts really easy to follow and helped to make the longer one seem more manageable. Another thing I appreciated about this site was that every post had a picture associated with it. This helped to draw my eye to their posts.  you things a sentence or two at a time and then wrote a response that they assumed that you would be thinking. I was glad that this blog showed their posts in chronological order starting with the newest posts because then it was easier to find the most updated information.

Just like the other blogs I looked at, I thought they could have been better about using a regular upload schedule. From what I could tell, they posted at very random times and sometimes waited a month or more in between posts. However, I understand that college advice doesn’t change that frequently. I also wish that they would include an actual summary of their post rather than just showing the first couple sentences of their article. I thought that those summaries worked really well on the other sites because they were generally better at drawing me into the articles. Overall, I would recommend this blog to help you in deciding where you wanted to go to college because it had a lot of good advice. It is especially helpful if you create an account and answer a few questions about yourself. From there it will give you stats about your likelihood to be accepted or colleges that fit your criteria the best. This feature can be very good for looking deeper at specific colleges if you want more sources than just that college’s website.
