The blog I looked at this week was called Peterson’s. Peterson’s blog mainly gives advice surrounding variety of topics for kids in high school or older. Its main topics of interest are post secondary education, as well as job opportunities and test prep. Peterson’s blog is authored by what appears to be a team of people. When looking at some of the posts I noticed at least five different authors. The blog appears to be created by a company, whose employees write this blog for a living. It is clear that each post is designed to remain as unbiased as possible in order to appeal to the most widespread audience possible. Obviously there is some bias in the articles as it is impossible to write without any personal bias. Because of the goal to be less biased, each of the posts lack stories of their own personal influence. This means that this blog could probably easily beat my blog with popularity, simply because it would show up earlier on a google page. However my blog may be more appealing to some people because it contains my own personal opinions and experiences.
One of my favorite things about this blog was that it was very well organized. It had six tabs at the top that sent you to other pages to assist you with things such as college searches, grad school searches, test prep, and scholarship search. Inside their blog web page, they also have their posts divided into college advice, grad school advice, test prep article, funding articles, and international articles. Another cool thing about this blog was that it uploaded podcasts around once a week. When I look at these podcasts, I noticed they tended to focus more on cool jobs to look into for possible employment after you finish college. This contrasts the rest of the material on their blog which as stated previously focuses mostly on school. When reading the articles I noticed that each post was packed full of information and advice with how to make college decisions or what to expect once you were there. I thought that they could be very helpful in easing any stress a person may have regarding college or other post secondary education.
One of the things I thought they could have done better was that they could have posted more frequently. From what I could tell, they only posted once a week. I understand that it allowed them more time to perfect their articles. All the articles were obviously very well written which is probably partially due to the fact that they had more time. Another thing I thought could have been better was I found it hard to find the posts that were posted most recently. They had a sidebar that would show all their most popular posts. This made sense as a business because I am sure they were trying to hook readers on their popular posts and so that they would continue to read other posts by them. However, I personally found it annoying because I thought it would help me to understand what the website was about today. Overall I thought the extreme helpfulness of the blog was enough for me to look past the few problems I had. I would recommend this source when looking into all the things you wanted to do later in life after college.
