For my third mentor blog post, I looked at Zety Blog. Although this blog is not formed around college, it is formatted very similarly to those blogs. This blog is very popular and has been published in many major news sources including The Guardian, Huffpost, Lifehacker, Busisness.com, Financial Times, and Forbes. When you first pull up this website, the blog welcomes you and explains that you can “find the best job search, resume writing, and career advice” on their blog. They also claim that they have access to the experts to help you “breeze through your job interview.”the goal of this blog is to give the reader job advice. I originally found it when researching how to choose what you want to major in. On the homepage you have the option of filtering the posts so that you only look at posts from one of the categories. You also have the option to make an account on their website so that they can help you make your resume.
One of the most interesting things about this blog was that the posts appeared to be written in the format of a conversation. They told you things a sentence or two at a time and then wrote a response that they assumed that you would be thinking. I also found it very cool that they would share student’s stories. For each of their posts they also had a written summary that quickly caught your attention. These summaries typically end with a sentence like “read on to find out” or Interested? Read on”. Similarly to the other blogs I looked at I enjoyed how this blog was well organized. However, I wish that when the dates the posts were posted were easy to see without clicking on the posts. One thing that set this blog apart from the other blogs I looked at was the the posts they showed you first appeared to be the most popular posts rather than the newest posts. I think this is because the blog is designed to help you with your job search instead of send you frequent updates on the topic. Naturally the posts that would generally be the most helpful to everyone would be the most popular post. Because of their objectives, I think this format actually works for this blog.
Similarly to the other blogs I looked at, I thought they could have done better was that they could have posted more frequently with a regular upload schedule. From what I could tell, they posted at very random times and sometimes waited a month or more in between posts. However, I understand that the best way to get a job and do it well doesn’t change a ton over short periods of times. Therefore it would be hard to come up with relevant advice more frequently. . Overall, I wouldn’t recommend this blog to help you in deciding where you wanted to go to college because it is intended to give career advice. However, I would recommend this blog for after you finish college and are looking into getting a job.
